After a twelve-year stint with the U.S. Air Force, and a sincere desire to perfect his artistic abilities, he left the military in March of 1969 and began studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. He attended FIT on a part time basis for three years. He wanted to become a fashion illustrator, but financial and personal pressures forced him to drop out in 1973.
Mel resumed his studies again a year later at Jersey City State College on a full time basis, while supporting his family by working a full time night job and freelancing fashion drawings for various dress shops around town.
While Mel admits to being a multimedia artist, he seems to have struck gold with his unusual pen and ink drawings of elegant, elongated African figures. These drawings are dignified, flowing, graceful, and harmonious. The designs throughout the figures are reminiscent of the scarification markings that identify the proud cultures and customs of Mother Africa.
The drawings contain expressions of common community experiences of work, play, laughter, sorrow, joy, dance, and caring relationships within the family setting. Each offers insight into African communities around the world.
