McKinney has been painting all of his life. Beginning at the age of six, he has progressed steadily. Frequent visits with his father to the Earl Theater in Philadelphia sparked in him tremendous energies to portray many of the old jazz greats: Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Eubey Blake, Satchmo, Coltrane. His sensitivity for endless observation finds natural expression not only in his portraits showing what musicians hear and feel with deft clarity; his gentle portrayals of neighborhood people and especially the elderly have a similar poignancy, compassion, warmth, and familiarity.
McKinney paints that which he loves in life, images from the Black Community. Painting in the spirit of those whose lives he has touched, he expresses in his portraits an understanding of the dignity of his varied subjects.
It is with these universal appeals, the blending of attitude and technique in McKinney's work that has captured attention all along the eastern coastline and westward at solo exhibits and group shows. These include Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, Pennsylvania State College, The University of Virginia, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Hallway Gallery, Georgetown, Sutton's Gallery, Philadelphia, and the Gallery Tanner, Los Angeles.
He has traveled to Europe to exhibit for the Armed Forces in West Germany. McKinney also was chosen to do the 1989 black history calendar for Atena Insurance Company in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1989 his work was used for the Migrant Referral Project Conference Poster.
McKinney has been featured in many publications throughout the country and has made numerous television appearances. In addition to his countless awards, his works are represented in innumerable corporate, institutional, and private collections. His works have appeared on television on "The Bill Cosby Show", "Desmond", "Bustin' Loose", "Frank's Place", and a new James Earl Jones movie seen on TNT.
